Nosferatu

  • Nosferatu: Eine Symphonie des Gravens (Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror) (1922) - First vampire movie ever made was produced by German Prana Film. Directed by F. W. Murnau, and starring Max Schreck as the vampire Count Orlok, this movie represented unauthorized adaptation of famous Bram Stoker's novel Dracula. Because of the nature of silent filming and rights management, director changed the some of the names of the characters, story points and managed to produce chilling movie that is to this day regarded as one of the hallmarks of the early silent film cinema. Iconic scene of Max Schreck in shadowy disfigured form of Nosferatu changed forever the movie scene by introducing real and tangible feeling of horror into the hearts of the public.
  • Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979) - Director Werner Herzog and actor Klaus Kinskisuccessfully remade the classic and chilling tale of Nosferatu. This movie is today celebrated as one of the best vampire movies ever made.
  • Shadow of the Vampire (2000) - This alternate history movie imagined that famous German actor Max Shreck (played by Willem Dafoe) was indeed a true vampire who was brought to the set of the original Nosferatu to provide authenticity.

Dracula

Since the first appearance of Dracula in 1931 there were over 100 movies with this legendary vampire in lead role. Here are some of the most notable ones.

  • Dracula (1931) - After seeing the popularity of Bram Stoker's vampire novel, Hollywood executives took a gamble and produced for a first time horror movie with Hungarian actor Bela Lugosi in lead role. Tremenduous success that followed initial screening ensured the birth of Hollywood horror movie genre (Frankenstein came only a few years later) and countless sequels where legendary Dracula stalked his prey among mortals.
  • Dracula (1958) - Another big surge in Dracula's popularity came in late 1950s when famous English actor Christopher Lee managed to portray Dracula in fascinating, powerful, sexual and terrifying way. This movie spawned several sequels with Lee in main role (although he did not want to act in them, and has downgraded his role to few appearances) and wide range of other Dracula movies in 60s and 70s.
  • Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) - Extremely successful adaptation of original Bram Stokers novel with Gary Oldman in lead role and Francis Ford Coppola directing.
  • Dracula: Dead and Loving It (1995) - Popular parody of Bram Stokers Dracula, directed by comedy genius Mell Brooks and Leslie Nielsen in leading role.
